Effects of Consolidation Stress Ratio on Deformation Modulus in Saturated Cohesive Soil

Hirofumi TOYOTA

The deformation modulus of anisotropically consolidated cohesive soil was examined in a previous study. The local strain measurement and the bender element tests (referred to as the BE test) were conducted using a triaxial apparatus to compare the deformation modulus obtained from the two testing methods. As a results, it was clarified that the elastic modulus obtained from the local strain measurement is different from that from the BE test according to stress conditions.
Then, the experiments were carried out under two types of stress conditions, those are effective confining stress constant and effective axial stress constant, to examine the stress conditions, which dominate the elastic modulus.
The finding obtained in the present study is shown as follows.
¡ÖCase with effective confining stress constant¡×
¡ The Young's modulus and the elastic shear modulus obtained from the local strain measurement become small with an increase of K-value.
¢ The elastic shear modulus obtained from the BE test shows almost constant value even if K-value changes. Therefore, there is little effect of K-value on the elastic shear modulus.
¡ÖCase with effective axial stress constant¡×
¡ The Young's modulus and the elastic shear modulus obtained from the local strain measurement indicates almost constant value without the effect of K-value.
¢ The elastic shear modulus obtained from the BE test became large with the effective axial stress.
The followings are conclusions led from these results.
¡¦The elastic modulus obtained from the local strain measurement is dominated by the effective axial stress.
¡¦The elastic modulus obtained from the BE test is dominated by the effective confining stress.
